It can be very hard to get many Original Japanese Garage Kits in the USA or Europe, so in this thread I will try to explain how we use Yahoo Japan Auction to buy many production and show only kits.
Yahoo Japan is alot like Ebay since Japan does not have an Ebay of their own.
The pages of Yahoo Japan are in Japanese so most of us can not read them but there are tricks to getting around it that I will discuss later.

The first thing you'll need to do is make it so your computer can read Japanese characters. Using Windows XP: Go to the Start menu then click on Control Panel.
In the Control Panel click on the Date,Time,Language, andRegional Options button with the picture of the calender over the Earth next to it. Once there click on the Regional and Language Options button with the globe next to it.
This will open up a new window, in this new window click on the Languages tab at the top of the window. In the Languages window you will see a Supplemental language supports box, in that box click on and check the box next to Install files for East Asian languages, next click on the Apply button at the bottom of the window. At this point you may be asked to put in your Windows XP disk, put your disk into the cd drive and follow any dirrections given by the computer from there. After a restart of your computer you should be able to read Asian Characters. (NOTE: Since I do not have Vista I'm not familiar with it's language settings)

Next step is the set up an account with an Import agent that will bid on auctions for you and ship them to your home for an small service charge. This is important because most sellers will not sell or ship goods outside of Japan.
Here is a list of Import agents:
Shopping Mall Japan: http://www.shoppingmalljapan.com/
Akibado: http://www.akibado.com/index.html
CELGA: http://www.celga.com/
Rinkya: http://www.rinkya.com/
Most of us have been really happy with Shopping Mall Japans prices and service.

Next thing that might come in handy is a free translators. While it is hard for translators to convert Japanese to english it is usually enough to get the idea of what is going on in the auction.
AltaVista-Babel Fish: http://babelfish.altavista.com/
WordLingo: http://www.worldlingo.com/en/products_services/worldlingo_translator.html
Google: http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

I will add translators and import agents as more become available.

Ok now lets get to the auctions:D
Here is the main window for Yahoo Japan Auctions : http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/

Here is the link for the WHF, which is a show where alot of original garage kits are sold: http://search.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search?sb=desc&desc=whf&auccat=0&acc=jp&apg=&f=0x62&s1=end&o1=a&alocale=0jp&mode=1

Here is the big general search for figures: http://list4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/2084023789-category-leaf.html?f=&alocale=0jp&mode=1

Here is a more specific one: http://list4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/2084040570-category-leaf.html?apg=3&f=&o1=a&alocale=0jp&mode=1

This will get you started. There are alot of more specific searches for different anime shows, sculpters, characters, goods, and companys.
I sure our fine members here would be happy to add searches to this thread that they like or info that they personaly find useful.

**Before you bid, make sure you read and understand the auction description thoroughly. Watch out for hidden prices and surcharges added on after the auction ends. Be wary of new sellers and items located outside of Japan. As with any auction system - if it sounds too good to be true - it probably is.

Great guide, good Doctor! :D

Here is the link for the Wonder Fest, which is a show where alot of original garage kits are sold: //snip

And here's one for the more specific japanese term for the event; ワンフェス (http://search.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search?sb=desc&desc=%a5%ef%a5%f3%a5%d5%a5%a7%a5%b9&auccat=0&acc=jp&f=0x12&alocale=0jp&mode=1)
My experience is that this search often brings down more results; as I'm shecking now 3 more pages, so running them both will cover up most of'em...

I can't thank the author enough for this information, it's been a huge help!
Unless I'm mistaken the infoseek link (http://www.infoseek.co.jp/Honyaku?pg=honyaku_top.html&svx=101100) is not longer valid. Could someone more adept at navigating japanese sites update the information?

Thanks for the update on the infoseek translator ;). I've removed that link.

A couple things I learned in recent months :

1. You can perform all-inclusive searches using a single query by encapsulating mutiple search terms in parentheses. Example, (ワンフェ ワンダーフ) incuding the parentheses will search for both shorthands of "Wonfes" and "Wonderfes." Likewise, (トレジャーフェスタ トレフェス) will search for "Tresurefest" and "trefes"

sample:
http://search.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/search?p=%28%A5%C8%A5%EC%A5%B8%A5%E3%A1%BC%A5%D5%A 5%A7%A5%B9%A5%BF+%A5%C8%A5%EC%A5%D5%A5%A7%A5%B9%29&f=0x2&alocale=0jp&mode=1&auccat=0

2. you can exclude results much like ebay exclusions.

searching for "マブラヴ" (MuvLuv) results in 157 auction results
however:
searching for "マブラヴ -a3" removes a lot of the Senjutsuki mecha (A3) entries in the reults (93 auctions)

example :
http://search4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/search/auc?p=%A5%DE%A5%D6%A5%E9%A5%F4+-a3&auccat=25464

Another thing I learned, which wasn't around a couple years ago:

If you're not familiar with Japanese, you can look up series names and full names of characters on Wikipedia or MyAnimeList (http://www.myanimelist.net) from there, it's an easy copy and paste to the Yahoo-Japan auction pages

Is there a way to exclude user "araragama333" from the search?
7 pages of recasts mixed with originals is annoying:shakeshead:

It's easy with that seller - they put the star symbol in every auction title.

Put -★ after your search keywords and it will ignore all auction titles with the star symbol in it

Thanks Masa!::thumb
Not 100% proof (he have some items without "star") but at least it will save some time.
I tried check search options, even tried random codes like -userid:araragama333 and many others but it’s seems it’s not use:unsure:

Amazing! Another question for Masa sensei. Do the dot, star, square and diamond (● ★ ■ ◆) symbols each represent something specific? Are there any others that are important to gk hunting?

I'm not sure if they have any symbolic meaning. They are probably just put there to make it easier for the seller and their customers to find the auctions :hmm: Just eliminating the symbols doesn't work all the time, as some legit sellers use them on occasion.

A lot of recast sellers like to use the shortened word ガレキ (Gareki) instead of the full term ガレージキット (Garage Kit). Just avoiding that helps a lot. Most of them stick to specific naming schemes, once you find one of them, the rest of their auctions are usually pretty easy to spot. Look for repeating terms in the auction titles like "cheap, and great deal' and weird code numbers like S2304 and F1345.

Most of them used to be listed under the Resin Kit, and Cast Kit searches... but these days you find just as much in the regular Garage Kit section.

This is really helpful - though I still feel like a complete newbie LOL. I've been looking for Cammy/street fighter kits to try and get my animie collection started. I signed up with Shopping Mall Japan, but I'm sure I should be getting more results... :crys: I'll keep at it though

Welcome to the forum!

This will search for garage kits with the cammy name -

http://search.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search/auc?p=%A5%AC%A5%EC%A1%BC%A5%B8%A5%AD%A5%C3%A5%C8+% A5%AD%A5%E3%A5%DF%A5%A3&auccat=0

This is a simplified version that searches for "kit" and "cammy" in case the seller called it a resin kit, cast kit, etc...

http://search.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search/auc?p=%A5%AD%A5%C3%A5%C8+%A5%AD%A5%E3%A5%DF%A5%A3&auccat=0

Those two should narrow it down for you.

Thanks for the welcome and also the great tips - some great kits, it's a shame not all will ship even using SMJ - thanks again though, great tips and it's a great start. Pleased to be here

You will see that most sellers won't ship internationally, but they don't mind sending it to a deputy service location in Japan. The service will send it out from there. Thats not a problem.

There are a few who won't deal with certain deputy services. choke_slum is one that comes to mind, but I heard he will accept bids from Celga or Rinkya, can't remember which. I've only had one bid refused in 50+ wins with SMJ.

BlondeArrow
04-24-2010, 03:20 PM
LOL - trust me, I tried to bid on one that didn't LOL. choke_slum has some great kits that I can see, I wonder which one he accepts...

Kumama

He accepts Rinkya, or actually if he doesn't Rinkya will find a way around it. But you will pay more with them than SMJ.

telemarq, it was choke_slum who refused SMJ, and it was just an automated message which read something along the lines of "This seller does not wish to sell/use trading (or something) out of Japan" - it was along those lines...
