I ran out of epoxy putty so alita is on hold at the moment unfortunately. and since the thai resin kits i have make me shudder when i think of working on them i needed something to keep me busy. hence this female whoever she is started tot ake shape. there was and is no plan for her. i'm just winging it and figuring it out as i go. the lump of sculpy in place of her head is to just give me an idea at the moment. her arm positions arent totally decided either. anyway here we go! ^^

"Avert your eyes children, it may change form!" :D
Two questions:
1. What are you using for the armature? Metal wire i.e. the infamous coat hanger or something more like aluminium florists wire?
and...
2. Roughly what scale?
This should be an interesting evolution to follow.
I'm really liking the starting shape of this one Arie :D .

using a florists wire and will be using thinner copper wire when i get to her hands. i found the copper wire works well for helping shape fingers. :)
as for the size, the part you see in the pictures is about 3 1/2 inches tall.
i did come up with a good idea for her today s oshe will not end up being your typical "pin-up" looking anime girl. plus i've put together a weapon for her. ill try and take some more pics tonight ^^

well heres some pics of her new weapon. its going to be a double bladed sword thingy. i used some wooden shish kabob sticks and some beads i had. its been primed already to get a more even look to it. i dont know if youll be able to make out some of the detail on the beeds though.

still more to do but you'll get the rough idea about the plan for her legs. feet, er hooves, have yet to be done :p

been working off and on all day sanding and shaping her legs. still some detail work to do and some more smoothing to do but they're looking pretty good so far i think.

it is a lot of fun ^^
and you were right on with the tail hehe ;)
lots of filling to do yet but figured i should post some more pics ^^
the ears arent done but you can get an idea of what they're going to look like. hair will be a while before its added. after filling all the gaps my next step is to work on her clothing. then her wings and finally her hair.
thats the plan anyway, if it will go that way we have yet to see ^^

brief review of the new epoxy putty-
Ace Hardware brand 2-part plumbers epoxy putty- this stuff is grey and light greyish in colors. it has a 3 minute work time and cures hard in 5 minutes. its kind of hard to tell when both parts are mixed just by looking at it. i found it easier to go by texture. vaseline helps with mixing it. it didnt stick to my fingers nearly as much as the blue and white loctite putty. it also smooths much easier with just water. it also cures a nice grey color which makes it easy to see what needs to be sanded without having to rely on primers. all in all, i think i may end up sticking with this versus the lovtite stuff. it's also about 25 cents cheaper than loctite and comes in larger tubes.
ok been working all day and this is what i've gotten done.
there is still a ton of sanding and some touch ups to do on this leg but i can give you a look anyway ^^
it may be kind of hard in the pictures, but her pants are laced up on the sides with skin being visable through the laces. I wasn't entirely sure how i was going to do it so i kind of tested things out.
first i sanded down the skin area that would be visable until it was really really smooth. then i drilled small holes down both sides of the exposed leg flesh a measured distance apart for the "laces" i then glued one end of some thin copper wire into the holes. this would be the part of the lace that comes from the back of the fabric.
once the glue dried i bent the wire flat so it lined up with where it would enter the opposit pice of fabric. over the glued end, i used a 2-part plumbers epoxy putty (a new brand i'm trying since Ace hardware was the only hardware store close by). i smoothed it on and shaped it so that it resembled fabric being stretched by the hole the lace is going through. once i did this on both sides, i then took the loose end of wire and stuck it in the hole of the opposite piece of fabric and glued it in.
since i'm planning on casting this eventually, i had to do something about the fact that the laces do not lay flat against the leg. so i used some dissolved putty surfacer to fill in the little gaps under each wire. once that dried i took it out to my work room and primered its easier for me to see what i need to sand and what gaps i have yet to fill.
there will be more done to this leg, probably shin armor, but i'll figure that out soon as i'm happy with the pants.
as always, comments and critiques are greatly appreciated. there's probabbly an easier way to achieve what i wanted so lets hear it :)

By the way, if anyone wants to help me think of a name for this un-named hottie that would be great. I also need to think up a color sceme for her. I'm leaning towards light grey skin since she's a gargoyle but other than that I have no plans.
suggestions please! =^.^=
I turned on my fantasy name generator widget (yes, it actually exists :P) and it said her name was Cyan

now what's her last name or is she a one-name gal? hehe :p

ok well after looking at the laces i'd done i decided i didn't like them. they were too bulky seeing as the wire just did not do what i wanted it to. so i ripped them out and tried something new.
i re-drilled the holes but this time i drilled them all the way through the leg. i then took some DMC embriodery floss (http://www.dmc-usa.com/dmc_products/DMC_Threads/Cross_Stitch_Threads/Six_Strand_Embroidery_Floss)
i first threaded the laces that would be on the underside of the material. once that was done i painted over the thread with some Mr. Dissolved Putty (http://www.best1hobby.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=168&Product_Code=GUP119) to "glue" the thread down. once that dried i used the 2-part epoxy putty to create the fabrice the thread iss upposed to be going through. redid the holes before it dried and added some crases so it looks more like the fabric is being stretched some by the laces. soon as the putty dried i finished threaded the laces and another layer of Mr. Dissolved Putty.
anyway, here's where i'm sitting right now. i just used my scanner to scan in the legs so its easier to see the detail. theres still a ton more to go of course but i get eager to post pics lol

Yeah, I like the new laces a lot! Very creative.
Don't take this the wrong way, but everytime I see the intitials for your website, the first thing I see is "MILF".
(Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Hmmm... Color sugestions and you're thinking greys and possibly naming her cyan?
I'd go cool greys with an obvious hint of blues. Not "Smurf" but more mythological. Of course I’m partial to those colors and this is free advice… ;)
Keep the progress pics coming!

...What material are you using to sculpt her? You said sculpey but what kind? I want to sculpt something too.. :D
Arieanna
03-21-2006, 06:31 PM
lol thanks. she's temporarily on hold for the moment until after i move and finish Alita but I do plan on finishing her soon as I'm able.
as for what type of sculpey, its just your regular original sculpey. honestly it bites when trying to sculpt anything detailed, especially thinner parts since it break's fairly easy. I've had to use it for my rough figure only then move on to using a 2 part epoxy putty for doing details. ATM the brand of epoxy putty im using is just Ace Hardware brand but I've picked up a small pack of Tamiya to try out.

Hi Arieanna!
Have you ever gotten back to doing this sculpt? It seemed almost finished when you were working on it a year ago!
Also, I have a question that I've been trying to find the answer to on all the sculpting Scratch Build threads and sites I've seen. After you do the finished sculpture, and assuming that it was built on using some type of wire armature, exactly how do you cut the pieces of the sculpture apart? Do you use some type of saw or some other tool that cuts both hardened polymer clay *and* metal wire of the armature?
Thanks!

she'll most likely be my next project i finish. i ended up setting her aside when i moved and just havent gotten back to her since i see a lot i want to change and/or fix. lol
when i plan my armatures i usually plan where i want parts to break down right in the beginning. then i make sure the wire is already cut in that spot so i only have the clay/sculpey/whatever to cut through. learned a lot considering when i originally broke alita down it was a mess. chipped sculpey all over the place from trying to get through the wire and aluminum foil.
the nice thing about the paper clays im using now is i dont actually need the foil or wire armature unless i want to really bulk a piece out to save on clay. the New Fando and Mr.Clay are strong enough to support themselves (once they've dried somewhat so they hold their shape). then i just pin the parts together like a regular kit after ive cut them apart to be able to do more detail on them.

How do you cut the wire in such a way as to still support the armature in the clay model?

This "Mr Clay" sounds pretty good! I'll see if I can get some here in the City, if not , I'll try to order it online.

takes some working to get the figure to stay together once i have the pieces apart. usually a combination of blue painters tape and blue poster tack will hold it together, as well as having the wires just long enough and bent to act like a pin. ill see if i can get time to drag out Cyan today and try to take some pics of the pieces.

This is looking great, have you already decided/planned on how you're going to make and attach the wings, in regards to armature etc? I'm always on the lookout for how wings are done recently as I've decided I'm going to tackle a winged figure (at least when I've finished the next couple of projects I have planned)
Arieanna

i havent completely figured out what im going to do for the wings. luckily since ive started using New fando, i have alighter method for making them which will be much easier than using the 2-part epoxies i believe. ill definately be making sure i take plenty of pics as i muddle through lol
