WIP ALPHA's Berserk EVA-01

Yeah .. it's been ages since I posted anything WIP wise though I -am- caught up in 3 commissions...
I just need to do something for myself or I'll go mad soon.
... Madder. Yeah.

This is the first Grail I tackle. The rest are still locked away safely in my lock less IKEA glass cases.
And, it so happens to be a mech. Or rather 3 mechs if you count the ones making up the base.
I have always been a fan of organic looking sculptures (Takayuki Takeya is sort of a house God here and this kit is sculpted by his frequent collaborator, Kenji Ando), so Alpha's non scale (about 17cm high, or like a smaller 1/8 figure) Berserk EVA-01 appealed to me the first time I saw it back in '98.

It's the one with the wing growing out of her left shoulder, standing over the squirming 00 (yellow version, desperately clutching the spear of Longinus) and 02, both appearing to be half engulfed in some sort of fluid; blood or LCL?

Since the surface detail is so exquisite (lots and lots of corrosion and fleshy/organic areas), I believe I will paint this kit mostly by hand, only using the airbrush for the basic armor colors. I'll use mostly oils for details and washing and I will play around a lot with different surface finishes (gloss, flat etc) in order to give this piece Life.

Dr.H ... you'll have an order for a base quite soon. I hope you still have the NERV logo you applied for Arienna a while back (or I'll have to make a new one)!

Thank God I can use the laptop for posting ... Didn't quite think of that yesterday night ^_^;

Ok, well .. I've ordered the base from the Good Dr.H
It's a round wooden one with the NERV logo engraved into it, covering all of the surface.

I did a quick sketch and begun doodling about the placing of the kit:



I have never been a stranger to butchering kits; even grails, so ...



And the End result ended up quite as what I was after ...

The end result of today's session was that I finally got to see what this monstrosity actually looks like.
I mean, that paint up pic I linked to in the first post doesn't really do this kit justice, but it was the only one I've ever seen.
Now that I know what I'm working on I can but wonder 2 things;
1) Why didn't I buy this kit sooner?
2) Why did it take me so long to get it to the work bench?


All parts have been pinned, especially the wing parts



All major parts were sculpted in with Milliputty



And the result, prior to putting all parts in a degreasing bath over night was this beautiful mock-up (sans shoulder pad):

Base is built and clear coated Engraving will be done tomorrow so you'll see finished photo's of the base shortly.
Looks like this kit is going to be wicked cool Joa!

Holy ....... that base rocks ! i wish i had a project worth putting on such a base .

The primed parts were checked for pinholes today. Not much to do, but putty has to cure so I started early in order to get some paint on the piece today ... ^^



The details really come out once the flat primer dries; the head will be a blast to paint with its open mouth. I just need to do one lil' alteration...



First paint session... tedious and doesn't look like much but I'll get there eventually...



The book in the background is Evangelion in 3D 2nd ed.
